‘Why Enahoro Shunned OBJ’s Invitation’: A mistake?
NigerianNews Editorial

We hope this is not a mistake by our elderly and talented Chief Enahoro. We feel the Chief and the people associated with PRONACO have so much to offer this conference and Nigeria.

Their membership remains the only group that offers reasoned arguments not diluted with greedy emotionalism, and yes Mr Mantu, in our opinion, without hidden agenda.

In the first republic, we had the nightmare of the Parliamentary system, though many, including the PRONACO people clamor for it now. We believe this system has so many undesirable elements which a visit to our past could bring to light. Yes, the presidential system, they say is expensive, though it doesn't have to be. Knowing what we at the NigerianNews know about both, we would prefer a home-grown system, in the absence of which we are solidly in favor of the Presidential form of government. Although this system is currently heavily bastardized in Nigeria at present, we say, the bastardization is a symptom of a pervasive sickness in our society. The system is more replete with checks and balances than the old vomit we want to return to. If you do not agree with us, check our past experience with both systems in a reasoned manner

We trust PRONACO group not because we are in total agreement with them, but we know these people are honorable, with capacity to think. They will discuss the structure for the country rather than the furniture we put in this edifice called Nigeria. A good structure leads to a strong and lasting edifice. We are not sure we can arrive at lasting edifice if all we do is copy willy-nilly the two systems we so much like to copy. The PRONACO and the Abuja dialogues are where thinking people can come up with a home-grown structure that suits our temper. A structure is never designed for the greed and hidden agenda of the moment, but for all posterity.

Let us hope the PRONACO people have made the right decision. We do not see why they could not have a strong representation in the Dialogue and still continue with PRONACO as a guarantee for the implementation of either dialogue
