Tragedy as we see it unfolds in Florida
NigerianNews Editorial

Either we like to hear it or not, the whole World is one big Island. A moral turpitude in any part of this big island affects the whole Island. It is with this heavy heart that we write about the Terri Shiavo saga in Florida today, the Easter Sunday.

It is our position at the NigerianNews that our lives belong to God, and so, taking our own lives under any condition is like destroying other person's properties. If we subscribe to designating other person to act as a proxy to take our lives for us in case we are incapacitated, we have just destroyed the property of God which is what we are.

To some moral relativists, the case of Terri Shiavo seems clear, she had instructed her husband to terminate her life if she were to be in certain states unacceptable to her. In this instance, it was only the "husband" and some of his relatives who were privy to this arrangement.

To us at the NigerianNews, this arrangement becomes a suspect for the following reasons:

  1. It took Michael Schiavos several years before he remembered this entreaty by his wife

  2. The good book, even if we accept St. Mathew's gospel says you can only divorce your wife if she is guilty of purnea (lewd behavior), and St. Mark's gospel takes exception to any divorce. For the past fifteen years, Terri Shiavo can not be said  to have been guilty of St Matthew's ground for divorce. Michael Shiavo has since, without even a courtesy of divorce fathered two children in a common law arrangement. He lives with his common law "wife" while Terri carries her own cross of comatose by herself. Not a single court in the USA puts a searchlight on what seems to us an adulterous relationship between Michael and his "common law wife" though blessed with children acceptable to God.

  3. Terri only lived with the husband for five years, while the parents nurtured her to a life that attracted her "husband" to her two plus decades later. One would think that Michael would temper justice with mercy and allow the parents to take possession of their daughter in her last days, however, he holds on to an unverifiable claim, and also invokes the husband's right to his wife, which in our opinion he terminated when he settled with his new common law arrangement.

  4. Should Terri Schiavos wake up from her deep coma today, it is highly unlikely she will still consider herself married to Michael, her "husband" For, how do you decide to put asunder what would then seem like polygamy? Why is the Florida State law very oblivious to these facts?

The first world has diagnosed us for too long, maybe it is time for us to, at least, protect and sanitize ourselves from some of these evils emanating from this world. The Anglican Communion in Nigeria has taken the first step by following the Bible and not the American and Canadian Anglican communions in their new direction. We only hope the all powerful USA would not, one of these days, impose on us some of these values by saying "Our ways or No way"

We are almost sure, some people are going to send letters to the editor to ask why this concerns us, however, if issues like this are not studied relative to our culture which seems to now prefer the western culture to ours, we may sooner than later experience this ungodly scene unfolding in Florida.

The obfuscator may want us to believe that Terri is attached to a life-sustaining machine which is now unplugged, however, the simple fact is, Terri is being denied food and water, which means certain death. Supplying food and water does not mean Terri will live longer than her God's apportioned days on earth, however denying these essential source of life means interfering with her God's apportioned days here on earth. We are not talking of unplugging oxygen here but food and water - Terri can breathe on her own!

As long as there is still life in Terri, her life is being squeezed out of her, and that is destroying God's property. As we are all going to meet the Lord one day, may the Lord protect the spirit of Terri Shiavo. As for Michael Schiavos, he will surely meet God one day, at which time he will have a chance to explain his actions during Terri's traumatic last days
