Now, there is University of Abuja, but no more University of Lagos. If Jonathan has more chances, he perhaps will name the University of Abuja or University of Ibadan after himself, and O yes, by the way, including that new University in Otuoke!

The changing of the University of Lagos name to Moshood Abiola University seems to us an unforced error by a President who is willing to use all means to secure a second term, and he thinks the way to securing it is through the people of the South West! It seems to us that this president has no clue about the psyche of an average South Westerner, and we predict this latest act is also the reason why we think he has destroyed his chance for a second term in this zone.

President Goodluck Jonathan said that his government renamed the University of Lagos Moshood Abiola University in commemoration of Democracy Day and in honour of the late Chief MKO Abiola who paid the ultimate sacrifice in pursuit of justice and peace.

The people of the South West and indeed most people in Nigeria loved the generosity and the unyielding stand of Bashorun Abiola in the defence of democracy. It is in fact the violation of this principle of democracy by this president that Bashorun Abiola would not stand for while alive. There are many ways to honor Moshood Abiola, an example of one is to scrap democracy day, replacing it with June 12 day, but not by plundering the heritage of an institution that has been a bastion of quality education for many Nigerians for so many years.

In a move like this, the students and the faculties should have been involved! And what about the Alumni who came from the length and breadth of Nigeria, and in fact from abroad as well?

We hope there is a place for the National Assembly in this in overriding this ill-conceived unforced error by an error prone President We hope some of you, Alumni of the University of Lagos at the National Assembly will rise to the occasion by stopping this arrogance of power! If you don't, you will have to explain to your children unborn how a president with no clue, unilaterally alter the course of your history. You need to strip this president the power of unilaterally changing the name of any Federal university before he does more damage.

Now, there is University of Abuja, but no more University of Lagos. If Jonathan has more chances, he perhaps will name the University of Abuja or University of Ibadan after himself, and O yes, by the way, including that new University in Otuoke!
