Michael Jackson NOT GUILTY - a case with cultural divides or is it?

In about seventy days of trial, if the TV talking heads were to constitute the jury in the Michael Jackson saga, he would be heading towards the jail now. The good news for Michael Jackson was, Nancy Grace and  the other talking heads were not the jury.

The case is over, and only God knows the real truth. However, the jury made a correct call in a case where many years in jail were in the offing for Michael. This criminal case hanged on "beyond reasonable doubt" and the jury called it right.

Michael, a forty plus year-old man admitted sleeping in the same bedroom with his accuser who previously denied wrong doing on the part of Michael Jackson. The mother of the accuser has at least a history of past attempt at extortion. To a Nigerian, the sin of a forty year-old man sleeping in the same bed with kids not his own would be laughable as we all sleep wherever the space is available. To us in Nigeria, this is no more than another case of cultural anomaly warranting our demand that we should not ever be forced to look at certain cases in life with an American periscope.

When does sleeping (even by an eccentric character like Michael Jackson) in the same bed become a criminal offence? Before we answer this, the insinuation as conceived by the prosecutor has to do with the emerging American counter-culture. Pedophiles who would ordinarily be "stoned to death" in Nigeria have a conspicuous place in the emerging counter-culture in North America. A  Nigerian guy we talked to was very amusing in his conclusion; he feels since there are so many cases like this in the US, "it takes One to know One." In our society where homosexual relationship is almost a taboo, nobody will ever think of anything wrong with anybody sharing beds

Our friend mentioned his days in Lagos where he worked and shared the same bed (in one room living quarter) with a roommate before coming to US. The two roommates slept with each head on the opposite sides of the bed. In the USA, only homosexuals would do that! However, a non-permissive society like Nigeria, would probably "stone a homosexual to death" in certain part of the country. So, to some extent, nobody knows the American way better than the Americans. That is why we say that we may never know what the real truth is. As the law requires "beyond reasonable doubt", the Californian jury made the right decision, and may the Lord save America from the Television talking heads. The public right to know demands that an un-sequestered jury be tainted before they even get the chance to start deliberation. As long as people like Larry King lives however, maybe this would not happen since he does NOT ever become part of the story like the new crops of these talking heads.

Is our friend's conclusion that "it takes one to know one" applicable to this jury? Obviously not. They, just like a Nigerian would, do not buy the theory that merely sharing a bed makes one a criminal (a pedophile),  much to the chagrin headaches of the talking heads like Nancy Grace, Wendy Murphy, and particularly Dianne Dimond. While jury pollution did not happen in this case, absolute freedom exercised by the talking heads will continue to reek havoc on the American justice system.

Meanwhile, the Michael Jackson jury proves that there is no cultural divide with Nigerians by NOT criminalizing sleeping in the same bed, especially where there is no proof that anything else happened in the process.
