It is amazing to know that the Director General of National Boundary Commission (NBC), Alhaji Dairu Bobbo has a power to singularly draw a peace treaty based on his boundary survey without the input of the two Heads of State involved. Is diplomacy dead and two brother countries cannot solve a problem that can displace families? Has Alhaji Bobbo, acting on behalf of the foreign Ministers of the two countries, been given the signal to carry his duty beyond what is technical?

Human beings are involved in this kind of boundary adjustment, and we hope Alhaji Bobbo is not just acting out of technical exhilaration in a case that ought to have been delicately handled by the two Heads of State involved.

While families have lived for so long on one side of a border, it is our belief two countries can act in favor of the human beings involved rather than in favor of an artificial boundary drawn by colonial masters. We also believe that where families have lived for so long on one side and the boundary is now re-adjusted based on this artificially drawn colonial boundaries, the two brother countries ought to be able to find a way not to disrupt human lives. We hope both Benin and Nigeria sides will think in terms of these human beings.

In the case of Benin-Nigeria border, it does not seem to us that mineral or oil is involved as was the case in the Bakassi peninsula, so the cost to both sides should be judged in terms of the human beings affected. You cannot just herd human beings across borders as you herd cattle in other to satisfy colonial boundaries. No country worth her name would allow her citizens to be that maligned as to assume the role of a cattle.

And to Alhaji Bobbo, we hope this is not just a case of unprofessional display of technical exuberance, otherwise we are almost prompted to call this Alhaji Bobbo an enthusiastic citizen and surveyor of the Republic of Benin.
