We like this former Senator !
NigerianNews Editorial

We at the NigerianNews are not the type to hide our feelings for certain Nigerians of which Senator Okunronmu is one. This former Senator does not take position based on the personality involved, he stakes the positions some of which are sometimes detrimental to his own well being. This is a trademark of an intellectual, and this is the way we would want all Nigerians to be.

If you do not remember, Sen. Okunronmu of AD was one of those senators probably rigged out of their positions by the machination of the South West PDP in the 2007 general elections. We will not be surprised if by this morning he is accused by some numbskull of being Yoruba irredentist or even ethnicist working on behalf of Obasanjo. This Senator was directly a victim of Obasanjo's South West home base policy in the last election. As you can see, that does not stop him from staking the right position on this issue. A good human being does not shift positions to suite the temperament of the moment.

So, if you believe righteousness does not start or end in churches or in the mosques but a way of life, stand up for the system and ask Atiku to do the honorable thing by resigning his VP position today. This does not stop Mr. Atiku to be relevant in the system in a new life after resignation. As a matter of fact, he stands to gain from this bold stand. If he really wants to become the next president, resignation is the best and honorable path for him regardless of what Bugaje and others are telling him. If he wants history as his friend and not "his" story with shallow root, he must resign now to plant a tree which an erring future Vice President or Deputy Governor will see as an example and a landmark on how a deputy should conduct himself in office.

Mr. Atiku, you have many friends all over the country, you are more likely to show a strong strength in a nationwide Presidential election in 2007. Do not think those who ask you to resign now may not support you in 2007. Be sure Mr. Vice President that those who ask you to resign do so with heavy minds, and so, do not rule some of them out as your supporters in 2007. However, this institution is more important than an individual.

You cannot accuse Okunronmu of being a friend of Obasanjo or an enemy of Atiku. He does not take a position because it is convenient or because that is what the party line is, unlike some of his colleagues in AD or the so-called pro-democracy group who cannot separate the institution from the individual or an issue from the individual. We salute you Sen. Okunronmu for your past principled stands and this call for Atiku's resignation.

We at the
NigerianNews through this editorial, again ask Atiku to resign as this is the honorable thing to do, Haba! We assure you, Mr. Atiku, you would have done much to strengthen this institution and the political space of the future by NOT clinging to this demeaning and empty position some of your friends think you should stake, and we ask God to forgive those who ask you to stay, for they know not what havoc that stance will wreak to the system. The presidential form of government and in fact, the whole institution is defaced by your sit tight attitude. Of course in a country where patriots are few, we are not surprised the mobs ask you to stay put. If you look at our record, you cannot ever accuse us of being in the Obasanjo crowd, in fact we try to stake a neutral position. We just want this nascent institution to succeed so much, we do not want ignorance to destroy it. Related Issue
