ODE TO PAST NIGERIAN PRESIDENT UMARU MUSA YAR ADUA: HE WAS JUST A MAN

Born like every other,
Grew up like any other,
Like me and you, born of a mother,
had a father and a brother,
He was just a Man

Like most kids he went to school,
graduated with a B Sc and MSc, yet he played it cool,
with a level-head, he taught and lectured in a school,
started from humble beginnings, later made it out of the pool,
He was just a Man

Born to a family that was aristocratic,
refused to join the corrupt horde that was bureaucratic,
he was truly and really charismatic,
A pity, only a few in his cabinet were sympathetic,
He was just a Man

He was two-time Katsina state Governor,
first Governor to become publicly, an asset declarator,
Even as President, refused to be a dictator,
with his amnesty grant, the Niger-Delta see him as their interest protector,
He was just a Man

First Nigerian leader in 40, to be University educated,
first to prove in Nigerian democracy, that force could be relegated,
though his 7-point agenda, he constantly promulgated,
He didn't live long enough to have them fully implemented,
He was just a Man

Some thought they could use him as a tool,
but, gently and wisely, he played them for the fool,
and refused to be their corrupt bull,
Alas, thanks to the wicked ones, he's gone too soon,
He was just a Man

Critics say, regretfully true, that his entry into the presidency was bad,
that he didn't do all he should plus more, forgetting he was not superhuman,
Methinks, we should not begrudge him, his death-given calm,
For in his frailty, he tried all he could as a man,
He was just a Man

Though he was a man of very few words,
And in the presidential arena, a man of fewer conquests,
yet, he was among the Nation's few good best,
Please God, Nigerians pray You, grant him eternal Rest,
He was just a Man.
