THE
FUGITIVE ALAMIEYESEIGHA
by
Ayoade Babatunde
It is no longer news to everyone how Alamieyeseigha was caught in
Britain with tax payer’s money and the subsequent trial that trailed
his arrest. The most shocking news to the whole world now is how he
managed to escape away from Britain after disguising himself as a
woman
thereby exposing the weakness of the British police security network
and making
serious mockery of the entire London Metropolitan Police. Although
this
is not the main issue to be discussed here now, it is a subject of
discussion for
the future.
Alamieyeseigha's major ‘sin’ is that he allegedly laundered a
substantial
amount of money . Before Alamieyeseigha, there was Governor Dariye
who also got involved in a similar messy situation in Uk, believing
that, as a governor he is a man of honor,
he was released on bail and allowed to keep his traveling documents.
He saw an opening and escaped from justice, he fled to Nigeria where
he has immunity and maximum protection by the police.
It was after Dariye escaped that the British Police realized that
Nigerian
leaders are not men and women of Honour, in view of this,
Alamieyeseigha traveling
passport was not released to him for him not to jump bail like his
comrade
for committing similar offence to that of Dariye.
Alamieyeseigha who is popularly called ‘Alami’ is already an expert in
stealing
public fund from EFCC findings. He Suddenly turned himself into a
leading movie actor by acting the role of 'James Bond 007'. It was
like a real movie,
he acted this perfectly as he mesmerized the security network
detailed
to him and suddenly appeared on the street of Yenagoa before the
British
police knew what hit them.
Unfortunately, the myopic minded, jobless and some paid hooligans
jubilated that 'Alami the fugitive has returned. I sincerely have self
pity for those Bayelsians youth, and the political jobbers who went
to welcome the crook.
Bayelsa is a potentially a rich state but Bayelsians are
poor. There is high level of unemployment among the youth of the
state. The state
of the infrastructure is nothing to jubilate about. There is no
portable water, no good road.
I was a Youth corper in the state in 1999 and I visited the state
again
four months ago when I was briefly on Summer Holiday in Nigeria. There
is no 'Dividend of Democracy' that could commensurate the amount of
revenue allocation going to the state monthly. On the other hand, I
also salute the boldness and courage of the progressive minded and
dynamic
youth of Bayelsa that also demonstrated against the criminal escape
of hitherto suspect who by this action suddenly turned himself to a
fugitive as there is no hidden place for him as he is a 'golden fish'.
He was Quoted to have said that is escape was an act of God. This is
very
common of thieves like him to be using the name of the Almighty God to
justify their immoral actions. God will surely punish people like
him that steal public fund and still justify their actions in the name
of God. Whoever see Governor Alamieyeseigha should give him these
Bible verses to read, Exodus 20 vs. 15,Mattew 19 Vs 18,Eph4 vs. 28. In
those
verses God condemned stealing in all its totality. Alamieyeseigha
has committed sin against man and God.
The issue today is that of Alamieyeseigha but we should not forget
that
we have plethora of people like him as our political leaders. The
amount
of money Alamieyeseigha carried as 'pocket money'' to Uk to lavish is
a child's play when we know the reality of what goes on with our
money.
It is no wonder that some analyst have argued that 'Nigeria is rich
but
Nigerians are poor'' It is people like 'Alami' and his comrade that
derives pleasure in impoverishing Nigerians. There are many serving
Governors, Ministers, Honorable, and 'Dis-honorable'' men and women
in the corridor of power in the so called 'crippled giant' of African
nation. Since Alamieyeseigh was arrested most of the Governors could
not travel out of the country again as they used to do before. This is
a clear indication that they all have skeletons in their cupboard. I
am still waiting to see that brave Governor who will go on foreign
trip soon. There are also men and women of low moral virtue who are
warming
up to take over in 2007.
Bayelsa state house of assembly should impeach Alamieyeseigha with
immediate
effect if truly there are some honorable people among them. Once the
Impeachment process is concluded, Alamieyeseigha should be arrested
by the Nigeria Police force for prosecution for faking Nigeria
passport.
This is a criminal offence. He is a criminal by all indication. He
should
also be extradited to United Kingdom for prosecution since Nigeria and
UK
work together on the issue of money laundering.
The likes of Alamieyeseigha who is currently a fugitive in Nigeria
should
not be allowed to hide under the name of political immunity again as
the National assembly should look into some of the grey areas in our
constitution.
These last years of democratic experiment have clearly shown us that
there
are many problems with our constitution. There is need for Nigerians
to
come together and get a new federal constitution that will be workable
for our political environment. [back
