Indigenes and Settlers
by Iorkam Azoom
I agree totally with
NigerianNews
views on the settlers and indigenes issue in Nigeria. You brought out
the heart of it, which is the issue of domination -culturally,
politically and economically- of the big tribes over the small tribes.
We all should learn to assimilate into the societies of the host
communities instead of creating parallel and competing kingdoms and
cultures in places we settle. The rights of freedom to live our lives
in our own ways can still be attained, but not by attacking the
cultural systems and rulerships existent in the settled areas. The
worst that can be seen is imposition of values and cultures, ideas and
rule over the smaller nationalities. It creates havoc and clashes
between peoples and brings mayhem.
There is the news that a governor said some ex-leaders, were settlers
-basically twisting and trivializing the issue that is causing havoc
and has the potential to cause more! He forgot that those whom
he has deprived of their rights via the unconstitutional sharia,
are also settlers, and should benefit from "settlerism" like the
ex-leaders he cited. He deprives settlers of their right to live
according to rights enshrined in the constitution, but when it
is convenient for him, he extols the virtues of "settlers"
imposing themselves through military action, or through electoral
manipulation!
The tragedy of the Nigerian nation is that these issues and problems
are
not even recognised in the document of nationhood, which is the
constitution.
No ideas have been canvassed in the national space on how to engineer
these intractable problems from the society. What we see is chasing
shadows in the name of inquiry commissions, emergency rule, deposition
of chieftaincy and the like. People feel more alienated and oppressed
by this chasing of shadows, because deep down, every one knows the
problems are not being addressed, and the agenda of the oppressors
will be imposed and called solutions! Wish we had leaders who love to
see a nation that will be called Nigeria. [back
