Babangida's Project Double O Seven

When I came to Lagos from Ondo in the late 60’s, I
got fascinated with James Bond movies, most of them written by Ian
Flemming. James Bond was and still is, the major character and he was
fondly referred to as Double O Seven which they interpret as license
to kill. Goldfinger, the bad man in the movie named “Goldfinger” got
frustrated by James Bond’s ubiquity and said and I quote, “first is
happenstance, second is coincidence and third is enemy action”. IBB’s
Project Double O Seven is enemy action against Nigeria and Nigerians
and must be treated as such. If Babangida says to you, “good morning”,
it will be in your own interest to check your watch, it may well be
one hour before midnight.
When I read that Generals Adisa and Olarewaju head
Babangida’s campaign outfit in Lagos and aptly named it Project 007 I
knew that Nigeria and Nigerians are in for serious trouble. This is
the very first time IBB comes out straight to tell us what he intends
to do in his second coming. Project Double O Seven-License to Kill. He
enslaved us during his first era, now he will kill us. With a GCFR in
his arsenal and the likes of Adisa, Olarewaju and the rest of the
accolytes parading as pseudo patriots, he is primed to take over from
Obasanjo and revive the memories of June 12, Abiola, Dele Giwa, Akilu,
Togun, OIC, divisionism, northern domination of the polity and total
chaos never before seen in Nigerian history.
First of all, General Adisa, boisterous and
uncultured, talks from both sides of his mouth. He vocalizes his
thoughts as the Yoruba mythical “Sango” would in his times. He likes
to do what we in Nigeria call “eye service”, oga’s boy. He likes to
act as someone who knows it all. He got roped in on Abacha’s phantom
coup and was to be hanged. At the trial we knew he was no more than a
jelly after all. He escaped death by whiskers. Before the coup, he was
Minister of Works and Housing. Every building in Lagos, qualified as
illegal structure in his own opinion. He took on Jakande - his
predecessor in that ministry and made an effort to flatten him.
As for General Olarewaju, I know next to nothing
about him. But if all their (Olarewaju and Adisa‘s) training in the
army could achieve is to name IBB’s political outfit Double O Seven -
License to Kill, we can discern from this, their level of intelligence
and indeed the depth of their education.
What manner of Presidential Campaign Manager will
name his group- Double O Seven? Only the likes of IBB, Adisa,
Olarewaju and the rest of them, particularly of Yoruba stock can come
up with such an ingenious name for someone who had called himself the
“evil genius”.
Come to think of it, may be they know what they are
doing. May be it is a subtle reminder of their past and a projection
of a future administration to be headed by them!
With Obasanjo as president for the second term
after his first stint as Head of State in the late 70’s, he joined the
likes of Milton Obote of Uganda, Jerry Rawlings of Ghana and Matthew
Kerekou of tiny Benin Republic in having the privilege of a second
coming. Although it is a little too early to know what legacy OBJ is
going to live behind after his presidency, the prognosis of a healthy
economy, self-sufficiency in agriculture, improvement in electricity
distribution, peaceful co-existence among the citizenry and etc, is
too doubtful at this point to be very hopeful for.
IBB is not an OBJ, nor is he a Rawlings or an
Obote. While he is too refined in his brutality to be an Idi Amin or
Abacha, we will not be too wrong if we put him in the same category as
Eyadema, Mobutu, Field Marshal Nimeri of Sudan or even General Suharto
of Indonesia. These leaders have damaged their various countries
almost beyond recognition. And by the time IBB was forced out in 1992,
he had destroyed our country almost beyond repairs.
On what record is IBB running to be president of
Nigeria again?
With a gap-tooth smile and the gait of a bouncing
soccer ball, he talked Dimka into fleeing from the TV studios in Ikoyi
after Dimka assassinated Murtala. He became a member of the Supreme
Military Council and began in earnest to work towards his ambition of
ruling Nigeria. Then, Shagari. Then he surfaced again as Chief of Army
Staff under Buhari and worked assiduously with his troops to undermine
Buhari’s tyrannical government. He cleared Buhari and got what he had
quietly spent about 7 years planning meticulously for: the ultimate
trophy.
He crept into our consciousness as the first
un-elected military president. Before him, no soldier had dared to
call himself president. As president, he opened Buhari’s NSO cells and
promptly clamped his own prisoners into SSS cells. Then he began to
destroy all that made Nigeria a nation. “He destroyed education,
health, agriculture and even the oil industry. He initiated the
culture of “settling” his political opponents. He personalized
governance to the extent that even his Chairman, Joint Chiefs of
Staff-Gen Domkat Bali had to resign in frustration. He dissolved the
Armed Forces Ruling Council at will and made his pronouncements the
laws of the land. By 1992, when he annulled the June 12 election, he
had completed the destruction of his primary constituency, the army,
through which he rose to become Nigeria’s one and only military
president”. It is rumored that he earned the distinction of being a
Nigerian that has been classified as persona non grata in the United
States.
The consequences of IBB’s annulment of Abiola’s
election are still playing out till this day. No one knows how it will
end.
When he was forced out, he claimed that he “stepped
aside”. It’s like Charles Taylor saying to his people, “ I’ll be
back”. Babangida means it. Four years before a presidential election,
he has become(?) the candidate to beat. And since no one has to vote
for the “establishment” candidate in Nigeria before he is declared
victorious, he may well emerge as next president. And this scares the
wit out of me. Not again a president whose record is as laid out
briefly above. Not again a man who has no regrets for plunging a
nation into chaos for selfish reasons. Not again should Africa’s most
populous nation be brought to despicable odium in the comity of
nations.
Project 007 otherwise known as Project Double O
Seven is an eye opener to what IBB’s purpose of running is going to
be. What promises can IBB make and “insha Allah” keep? He scotched us
before with scorpion, next time he would use a King Cobra? He stepped
aside the last time, but next time we are stuck with him?! I pulled
the nation into OIC the last time, next time, I would declare a
Taliban like Islamic Republic. I brought pain and anguish last time,
this time I will end your suffering by killing you?
Nigerians of good will, IBB should not be allowed
to run let alone win. Of all the persons who have ruled Nigeria, IBB
was the best prepared for the job of President. We had him for almost
a decade. We cannot claim ignorant of his capabilities.
A word is enough for the wise.
